Finding Light in the Dark: My Journey with Depression, Anxiety, and Zeenya
This post isn’t easy to write, but it feels important. Zeenya is all about vibrance, joy, and colour, which is why sharing my own struggles with depression and anxiety feels a little vulnerable. But the truth is, those challenges have shaped both me and my journey with Zeenya—and I want to be real about that.
Zeenya, well—it’s been a lifeline. Depression and anxiety weren’t always part of my life, but after a difficult few months—including my husband’s accident and other challenges—I was recently diagnosed with depression (on top of anxiety) in December. Since then, Zeenya has kept me focused, driven, and grounded in ways I never expected.
There are times when the weight of things gets a bit too much. I’m honestly pretty glad I work from home—because some days, I can just let the tears flow freely while I’m working. Don’t worry, I’m totally fine; it’s just that the emotions have a way of sneaking up on me. Thankfully, I’m in the comfort of my own space, so I can embrace the random cry-fests without anyone batting an eye.
But having this business to focus on, to pour my energy into, has kept me going. The process of creating, planning, and connecting with all of you reminds me why I took this leap. Even on the hardest days, Zeenya gives me purpose.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing and the Zeenya Community
Through this journey, I’ve also leaned heavily on the Five Ways to Wellbeing that help guide my mental health and are beautifully reflected in the Zeenya community.
Connect | whakawhanaunga
Connection is what makes Zeenya so much more than just a business. The community is something that makes Zeenya truly unique. Every time someone shares their story, a photo, or even a quick message about how Zeenya makes them feel, it makes me feel GOOD.
Be Active | me kori tonu
When depression or anxiety feels overwhelming, movement can seem impossible. But I’ve learned that even the smallest steps—a quick walk, a few deep breaths, or a short stretch—can make a difference. It’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up for myself in small, meaningful ways.
And there’s something about colour that changes everything. On days when my world feels grey, slipping into a pair of Zeenya's helps.
Take Notice | me aro tonu
Running Zeenya has helped me slow down and appreciate the little things. I am actually so busy now that the little things (like a catch-up with a friend or a cuddle with my grandbabies) are so important to me now.
Keep Learning | me ako tonu
Taking over Zeenya has been one of the biggest learning curves of my life. It’s pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined, from running a business to learning how to navigate my mental health.
I've come into this business with an open heart and mind, ready to take in as much feedback and learning from you all as possible. I wanted to make sure I’m listening to your experiences and your suggestions so we can keep evolving together.
Give | tukua
Giving back is at the core of Zeenya. It’s not just about activewear—it’s about spreading joy, confidence, and connection. Seeing how our pieces bring happiness to people’s lives is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Why I’m Sharing This
Zeenya is more than activewear—it’s about celebrating life—its messiness, its beauty, and everything in between. I’m sharing this because I want you to know that if you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Whether you’re dealing with mental health challenges or just having a tough time, you are seen, you are valued, and brighter days are ahead.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
Thank you for sharing this very personal post with the community, your mahi is truly valued and the Activewear so comfy and cheering. We’ve got this! Stay focused on the good on every day, celebrate the little wins.
Kia kaha Kylie. That was brave of you and I commend you for your openness. Having survived serious burnout with associated depression, I know the best thing to do is to reach out and it isn’t always easy to do so. Your comments will undoubtedly help others and how cool that Zeenya is part of your happiness and mission. Great you included those five important wellbeing actions – they are SO helpful. Ngā mihi nui ki a koe.
Everyone’s on a journey, for some it might look easy/great/fantastic. But it’s not always what it seems. Thank you for being open. May you have joy & peace in your life🤗
This is so well written and shows how balance in all aspects of life are so important but at the same time so personal. No two people will have the same needs but everyone needs to take care of themselves nonetheless. Thank you so much for sharing this important message. Kia kaha 💜
Nga mihi nui ki a koe. Thank you so much for sharing. It’s so true that we don’t know what anyone else is going through. ❤️ The more we talk about depression and anxiety the less stigma is attached to feeling that way. Thanks again for sharing 🙏🏻
