Artist Collection Finalist: Jana Patete

Jana Patete - Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Kuia

A strong sense of self and of her whakapapa, creativity was always encouraged and celebrated in Jana’s home. Kaupapa Maori strongly influences her work and continues to do so. Jana is currently studying in her second year of a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts with Honours at Massey University in Wellington.

Her inspiration flows from her surroundings and whanau which means the work she creates is deeply personal. The design she created for her submission for the Artist Collection is a tribute to her Aunty Tracey Patete who taught her how to weave. The pattern references unahi (fish scales) which connects her to growing up by the moana as well as it being a symbol of health and wellbeing. This is the first time she has created her artwork in a digital format.

Her approach to her artwork is very relaxed. She gives it space to evolve on its own and she’s open to trying new things. She wants to invoke a feeling of peace when people see this print.

When she’s not studying or creating, you’ll find Jana playing competitive hockey and coaching a secondary school team.

As yet, Jana doesn’t share her work online, but we know she has a lot of potential and we can’t wait to see what she creates next.
